In Swahili, safari means journey.

Travelling is one of the most extraordinary things we can do during the brief time we are granted on this planet. We are fortunate to be able to experience landscapes, cultures and lives different from our own, and to observe the world in all its forms. It is a continuous exploration of the world around us and of what lies within us.

Looking out of an airplane window and seeing the sea give way to the desert, gazing down at a strip of land and wondering who lives down there, what is happening at that very moment. Then, as you get closer, everything takes on detail and meaning.

Kenya is a place that teaches you to slow down. Pole pole – slowly, as they say in Swahili.

Of course, there are the animals: lions, elephants, giraffes and all that wildlife we’d only ever seen in documentaries until just a short while ago. But what stays with us goes beyond simply spotting them. It’s the silence of the savannah at sunset, the feeling of being guests in a world that exists independently of us. It’s the boundless horizons that remind us just how small we are and, at the same time, just how precious our time here is.

It is patience. The ability to wait for the right moment. A sense of pure wonder.

A safari begins as a quest for the wild, but the real journey is the one that this wildness takes within us.
