you’re in it.

Here, in the heart of the Maasai Mara – Kenya’s most famous national park, bordering the Serengeti in Tanzania – this feeling becomes almost tangible. We’re in our 4×4 with Rafael, the guide who’ll be with us throughout the safari. He has an incredible eye: whilst we’re still scanning the savannah, he’s already spotted the animal hidden in the grass.

The journey began the day before. We set off from Italy at 6.40 am on a direct Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt. After a stopover, we landed in Nairobi in the evening, where a taxi took us to the hotel.

To be honest, we hardly saw Kenya’s capital at all. Without a guide, it is strongly advised not to go out, especially after sunset. Rafael will then explain to us that crime is still a real problem and that, for those unfamiliar with the city, it is best to avoid taking unnecessary risks.

The following morning greets us with a smile and the traditional greeting ‘Jambo’. From that moment on, the landscape changes rapidly. Within a few hours, we leave behind the traffic and skyscrapers of Nairobi to pass through small settlements where life unfolds amongst houses and shops built almost entirely from corrugated iron. Signboards for medical clinics, dental practices and small hotels pop up here and there amongst the shacks.

The roads are paved, but are dotted with holes and have constant ups and downs.

And yet it doesn’t feel like we’re in the mountains: we’re at an altitude of almost 2,000 metres, whilst Nairobi itself is already at around 1,700 metres above sea level.

We make three stops along the way. The first is at a small shop with a panoramic view overlooking the Rift Valley. The second is just before Narok, for a toilet break and a coffee. The third is in Narok itself, where we withdraw some Kenyan shillings from a cash machine.

<img decoding="async" class="swiper-slide-image" src="https://notanordinarytour.it/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KENYA-WEB-14-scaled.jpg" alt="KENYA - Their way of life has always been linked to cattle rearing, which is also their main source of wealth and social status.

Traditionally, the diet is based on milk and meat, and on some occasions also cow’s blood.

The family structure has historically been polygamous, with men able to have more than one wife depending on their social status and the availability of livestock, although these dynamics are changing over time.

Their daily lives still follow rhythms that are deeply rooted in nature and livestock, although contact with the modern world is gradually changing many of the oldest traditions.

And perhaps this is precisely what leaves the deepest impression: the feeling of having observed, even if only for a few hours, a world that continues to live by rules very different from our own.

<img decoding="async" class="swiper-slide-image" src="https://notanordinarytour.it/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KENYA-WEB-120-1-scaled.jpg" alt="KENYA - Here, in the heart of the Maasai Mara – Kenya’s most famous national park, bordering the Serengeti in Tanzania – this feeling becomes almost tangible. After about seven hours’ drive, we finally arrive in the Maasai Mara. The tarmac gives way to dirt tracks, the villages disappear, and a boundless expanse of savannah opens up before us. Here and there, small Maasai villages dot the landscape, teeming with children. Along the way, we pass numerous schools and many Catholic churches: even the local minibuses have images of Jesus painted on their sides. Our accommodation for the next three nights will be Saruni Base Camp. To call it a tent is almost an understatement. It’s a proper hotel room, surrounded by nature and equipped with every comfort. In the garden, a few green monkeys are leaping from branch to branch. The staff immediately warn us to hide any food and medicines in a special box at the foot of the bed: the monkeys often come into the tents and never miss an opportunity to steal something. Looking out over the camp, a thought springs to mind. Everything we’ve seen along the way seems to belong to another world. On the one hand, there is the real Kenya, made up of villages, poverty and unemployment – a problem that is still very widespread, as Rafael tells us. On the other, there is our bubble, built around safari tourism. That is precisely what strikes you most. There are people who are born here, live just a few kilometres from the lions, and will never see one in their whole life. RAFAEL, OUR DRIVER AND THE GAME DRIVES Just before sunset, Rafael comes to pick us up for our first game drive. We enter the reserve itself. There are no villages or houses here: just animals roaming freely in their natural habitat. It only takes a few minutes to realise that Rafael knows this place like the back of his hand. He has been doing this job for twenty-five years. When I ask him if he likes it, he smiles and simply replies: “With all my heart.” From that moment on, a conversation began that would last practically the whole journey. He comes from central Kenya and belongs to the Kikuyu tribe, one of the largest in the country. He moved to Nairobi in search of work and, having started out as a self-employed driver, joined Spirit of Kenya in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic. He speaks perfect English. After all, Kenya was a British colony and English is still one of its official languages today. The first game drive is a whirlwind of excitement. We see antelopes, gazelles, zebras, giraffes, warthogs, jackals and dozens of other animals. Every encounter seems extraordinary to us. Rafael, on the other hand, watches them calmly and almost always comments with a smile, “Very common”. The real stars of the show are the big cats. When someone spots one, the rangers and drivers immediately alert each other by radio. The rules are also very strict. You may only travel along authorised tracks, and you are not permitted to get out of the vehicle, except in rare circumstances (such as needing to relieve yourself). The animals are now used to the jeeps and ignore them completely. A person on foot, however, would be perceived as prey. At one point, the radio comes to life. A leopard brought down a gazelle and dragged it up a tree, where it left it to return and eat it later. The leopard is considered one of the hardest animals to spot in the Maasai Mara. ‘The last time? Two months ago,’ Rafael tells us. Within a few minutes, dozens of jeeps began to converge on the same area. The wait lasts over an hour. Then, all of a sudden, a figure appears amongst the tall grass. It’s a female. With an impressive leap, it climbs the tree and catches its prey. No one is speaking. All you can hear is the clicking of camera shutters. Before heading back, we still have time to watch two lions bathed in

["post-4871","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
