day 4

between tuscany and lazio

In southern Tuscany, on the border with Lazio, tuff is the great protagonist of the landscape.

Three enchanting villages rise in this suggestive corner: Pitigliano, the best known, joined by the smaller but fascinating Sorano and Sovana. They are known as the tuff villages, sculpted and perched on this particular sedimentary rock that shapes their identity. Let yourself be won over by their flowery views: finding perfect corners to photograph is really easy!

In the next few lines we will take you to discover Sorano and Sovana. But, if this is your first visit to the area, we suggest you start from Pitigliano and the nearby Terme di Saturnia, with its famous Cascata del Mulino waterfall.
We leave you with a few shots from a trip we made a few years ago. ✴️

Where were we...

From Portoferraio we took the ferry back to Piombino, again with the Moby company.

The crossing takes about an hour and, this time, the cost for two people with accompanying car is slightly lower than on the outward journey: € 81.74.

After about two hours’ drive, we arrive in Sovana.
This tiny village seems suspended in time: the atmosphere is quiet, almost medieval, and life here flows slowly.

If you like walking and losing yourself in history, we recommend a visit to the Etruscan archaeological area, a tangle of paths, rock tombs and silences that tell of a millennial past.

And speaking of the Etruscans… we stopped for lunch at the restaurant La Taverna Etrusca, right in the central Piazza del Pretorio. From here, it is a ten-minute walk to the ruins of the Rocca Aldobrandesca, an ancient fortress of Etruscan origin, later the residence and symbol of power of the Aldobrandeschi family. Today it can only be visited from the outside, but is nevertheless worth the walk.

In a quarter of an hour’s drive we are already in the second village: Sorano, clinging to a cliff and surrounded by a wild and fascinating landscape.

For the afternoon, a special experience awaits us: a picnic in the Tuscan hills, with an overnight stay in a starsbox – a small wooden house with an openable roof, perfect for stargazing and feeling part of the landscape. ✴️

Everything is organised by Fattoria La Maliosa, which is about 30 minutes’ drive from Sorano.

On arrival you will be given a picnic basket with everything you need for a special evening: a good bottle of red wine, a selection of local cold meats and cheeses, two slices of homemade cake, fresh fruit, focaccia, bread and water.

You will be assigned your starsbox and receive all directions to it. Each cottage is nestled in a private corner of the vast farm, guaranteeing total privacy and authentic contact with nature.

what it takes

A pinch of spirit of adaptation. The cottage has no running water, so no sink or shower. You will find a small bathroom nearby. Our advice? Take some refreshing towels with you.
Being in the heart of nature, we don't rule out the possibility of a few curious insects coming to keep you company during the night. But that's part of the game!

what it offers

The magic of small things. The sun setting over the Tuscan hills, the starry sky above you, a good glass of wine in your hand, the sounds of nature all around... and time, finally slow, to share with your favourite person, away from it all.
