day 1

orbetello & monte argentario

From our home in Trentino, we arrive in Orbetello, in the province of Grosseto (Tuscany), in about six hours. Just in time for lunch!

We left in bad weather and down jacket, so it seems almost unbelievable to feel some warmth. The weather in May is perfect: it feels good in short sleeves without suffering from the heat.

We have lunch in the old town, at Osteria dell’Orologio, one of the few places still open despite the fact that it is already two o’clock in the afternoon and the tourist season has not yet begun.

In the afternoon we will have a driving tour of Monte Argentario, which is easily reached by the bridge connecting it to the mainland.

We make an initial stop at the Porto Ercole Lighthouse, where we enjoy a breathtaking view, then continue to the Duna Feniglia Nature Reserve. ✴️

It is a protected area separating the Orbetello lagoon from the sea, a natural oasis dominated by maritime and domestic pines. A perfect place to get lost among the scents of the forest and the songs of many species of birds: woodpeckers, hoopoes…

Here we decide to take a moment for ourselves.
We take a nice run in the shade of the pine trees and, without having planned it, find ourselves admiring one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. First from an observatory at the edge of the pine forest, then from the bridge that connects Argentario to Orbetello, with a view of the Spanish mill that sprouts, silently, from the lagoon.

In the evening, Orbetello’s “Il Tempio” bar, overlooking the Piazza Duomo, comes alive with live concerts and DJ sets. It fills up with young people and becomes the meeting point for nightlife in the center.

where we had dinner

We wanted to go to L’Asino d’Oro restaurant, which we later found out was temporarily closed.

Such a pity, surely the idea of “coccetti” – small plates that give the opportunity to taste different dishes, at a low price – was very interesting! We will have to come back…

We fell back on the restaurant next door, La mi casa, where we sampled some excellent seafood, but at a different expense than what was planned

where we slept

At the guest house Le due lagune, which we recommend. It is located not far from the Republic Square, and there is convenient parking within walking distance, free for guests of the guest house.
