Before leaving Umbria, we visit one of its most important cities: Assisi, which is only a 15-minute drive from Spello.
Although we are not particularly interested in the clerical world – here, half the people you meet in the streets are monks, and half the shops sell clothes for priests (after all, we are in the birthplace of St. Francis) – we nevertheless appreciated the architecture of the old town: all the buildings are built with a particular local stone, with its characteristic reddish colour, which gives the town an atmosphere all its own. The medieval charm, then, is really undeniable.
A sandwich at a kiosk in the centre and we set off again for Sirolo, on the Conero Riviera (Marche).
Unfortunately, time is pressing and we are unable to take a dip in the beach. If you have a few more days, take some time to visit this beautiful area and stretch of coastline, which has much to offer.
Unlike the neighbouring seaside areas of Romagna – characterised by stretches of sand as far as the eye can see – here the white cliffs plunge straight into the sea, forming bays and small inlets of unique charm.
So called because the rocks to the left of the beach resemble two nuns at prayer.
It can only be reached by sea:
With ferries - leaving from the Numana harbour
Hiring a boat - at Numana harbour
By canoe/sup - for the more sporty, departing from the beaches of Numana, Sirolo or Portonovo
A viewpoint overlooking the sea, which can be reached on foot, offers a spectacular view of the small bay of Due Sorelle.
Set off from the Sirolo cemetery and walk along path no. 302, in the Conero Park Integral Reserve
The path from Passo del Lupo down to the beach is closed by municipal ordinance due to danger of landslides
1 hour
The centre of the village of Sirolo is quiet and scenic: in the main square there is a large terrace overlooking the Riviera, perfect for enjoying the scenery.
If you are lucky, you can sit on a bench and watch the sea while, behind you, a talented musician accompanies the moment with his voice and guitar.
In the middle of the square, a bronze statue depicting Apollo and Venus in a suspended dance stands out: it is the work of a Dutch artist deeply attached to this place.
The B&B where we slept - Sirolo My House - is one of those places where you want to stay for a long time. The name doesn't lie: it really makes you feel at home, if not better! Great cleanliness, homemade breakfast, very kind owners. Our room also had a lovely private garden, taken care of in every detail. If one day I have my own business, I would like it to be just like this ✴️
